NEW LEGISLATION OFFERED FOR VIRGINIA
NORMI was recently invited to offer suggestions to the State of Virginia for a potential licensing law governing the mold industry. NORMI was honored to put this legislation together and for good
reason-the industry needs a clear definition of remediation, sanitization, and the scope of work for both inspectors and remediators.
NORMI believes the licensing of Inspectors, Remediators, Training Providers, and Environmental Laboratories will begin the process of legitimatizing the mold industry and eliminate the
"fly-by-nights" and "scam artists".
Inspectors should be given a clear criteria by which they can suggest mold sanitization or mold remediation. They should learn how to properly evaluate the affect of the environment on the
occupants, the exterior, and the interior as they affect indoor air quality.
Remediators should be trained in the standard techniques of remediating mold in the environment. However, they should also understand the methods by which they could develop a "mold-free" home
after the remediation process has been completed.
Training Providers, like NORMI, should be regulated by the state and their curriculums should meet a strict criteria so those who are trained will have the credibility they need in this dynamic
industry.
Environmental Laboratories should provide credentials that evidence expertise in the environmental field and the consumer should have confidence that the reports produced meet some standard
established by the state.
NORMI is making an impact and will continue to work hard striving to provide a resource for the consumer and the legislator who is interested in getting correct information on mold and mildew.
